Cold and Inclement Weather Policy

Recess for elementary school students is a time to provide a break from regular school routines and a chance to get some exercise and fresh air. It is expected that children will be dressed for the weather conditions (rain or snow or cold)  to be outside. When the temperature is colder than -23 Celsius, or if the wind-chill factor creates an equally cold situation, or if there is a storm with extreme weather conditions, regular outside recess is cancelled and students are allowed to remain indoors under their teachers' supervision.

Student Conduct

School rules address the three general areas listed below:

I respect myself:

  • I always put my best effort into my learning
  • I will take responsibility for my actions

I respect others:

  • I will learn and play cooperatively
  • I respect and accept the differences of other children and adults

I respect property:

  • I will use school equipment and resources in a safe manner
  • I will keep my work and play area clean

School Behaviour Policy

At Garneau School we believe that all children should be physically, emotionally and intellectually safe at school.

Safety is both physical and psychological. Safe and caring schools provide children with feelings of confidence and freedom from worry about any harm that could come to them. Such freedom enables them to trust that they are safe and can focus on their learning activities without distraction.

Each student and staff member at Garneau School is responsible for encouraging and maintaining a school climate conducive to learning. We believe that all children have the right to learn. To do so, each child must be in a school climate that is respectful and productive, without inappropriate behaviour take place, as our goal is to help children see themselves as being responsible for their own behaviours. The teacher in most cases deals with unacceptable behaviour.  However, there may be occasions when the principle, teacher, parents and child may meet to examine behaviour problems and to develop positive solutions.  At Garneau School we follow Edmonton Public Schools Student Behaviour and Conduct Policy.

Respectful Learning and Working Environments

Edmonton Public Schools, in co-operation with its staff groups, is committed to creating a healthy and respectful learning environment for students, staff members, trustees, parents, volunteers and contractors.

We recognize the worth of every person without discrimination. We are committed to working toward the elimination of objectionable behaviour in our schools and workplaces, and to maintaining an environment that is respectful, safe, nurturing and positive for everyone.

Please help us achieve this goal by interacting in a manner which respects the dignity and value of others.
